Bearshare and Kazaa were extra sketch for viruses due to the multiple file formats accepted, not that you couldn't trick the other programs. Soulseek still works well to this day and I've used it a couple of times in the last couple years to grab an individual song or two when I didn't want to BitTorrent somewhere, but I imagine you're wide open on there in terms of security.
