More Ideas

Instead of paying for music, consumers fund the recording of new music, a la Kickstarter. If a band does not receive sufficient funding, then fans do not receive studio recordings. Once songs are recorded, they are released digitally for free, rendering leaks and piracy irrelevant.

The first idea is really great. I pirate tons of music (unless anybody from the RIAA is reading this), so I often feel like spending money on t-shirts and shows are a better way of supporting a band directly. This would force people to support the artists they love – unfortunately I could see it backfiring hideously for small time indie bands, underground rappers, etc who don't amass the type of ravenous following that pop stars can, thus leaving us ONLY with the Lady Gagas, Justin Biebers and Taylor Swifts. I guess the more paradigms shift, the more things stay the same.
