Class of 2003

Our favourite songs. One per year.

Side A
(curated by Jon)

4. The Mars Volta –
"Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt"

It was between this and "Ignition (Remix)." One Jord loved and one Jord cut off midway through when it shuffled up on Tony's iPod during our drive back from Montreal.

Like much of The Mars Volta's oeuvre, it is easy to dismiss "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt" as indulgent wankery, but I see it as an eccentric "Paranoid Android."

In fact, the two songs share very similar structures.

"Paranoid Android"
A B A B C D E D*
verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge (1:56 – 2:41), section, interlude (3:33 – 5:34), recapitulated section

"Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt"
A B A B C D E D F
verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge (2:08 – 2:27), section, interlude (3:00 – 7:08), section, coda

The D sections even sound similar, and both songs end unceremo

Side B
(curated by DJ Ben)

4. The White Stripes –
"Seven Nation Army"

"Hey Ya!," "Crazy in Love" and "Move Your Feet" were all great tracks, but the best was "Seven Nation Army." It has a feeling of inevitability, that you are going to be swallowed up by guitars and drums and noise. It also pumps up the energy in a room really quick.

There is no chorus – just the hums and wails on Jack's guitar. How many songs without a chorus are this fucking amazing?

Just saw a comment on that old post about Seven Nation Army about letting Ratatat into the song of the decade debate – Seventeen Years is the fucking shit! I don't know if it's the song of the decade, but only because it's not nearly as funny in karaoke as Seven Nation Army.
