Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood (PABAAH) is an informal organization that calls for (as its name suggests) the boycott of work made by celebrities deemed "anti-American" or "unpatriotic" for "stepping out of their roles as entertainers" and making political stances, particularly against President George W. Bush and his foreign policy.
PABAAH's boycott list now includes over 170 celebrities, including such luminaries as: Eric Benet, Chevy Chase, Greg Germann, Esai Morales and Natalie Imbruglia, all of whom most Americans already ignore.
In an interview from March 2004, PABAAH founder Jon Alvarez said: "Any film that contains someone on the list will never see a dime of my money."
Under that stipulation, of the twelve major wide releases in December, Alvarez can only see: Blade: Trinity, Flight of the Phoenix, some (likely crappy) horror movie called Darkness, and Fat Albert.
According to Alvarez, "Hollywood sorely needs an infusion of new blood and ideas." Well, if I limited myself to fare like Flight of the Phoenix, I'd think that too.
The fact is, "original" cinema is out there (yes, even at a multiplex), but Alvarez foolishly boycotts it all based on casting alone.
Samuel L. Jackson's small voice part in The Incredibles prompted a boycott. Likewise, Alvarez will have to boycott The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou because (God forbid) Anjelica Huston has a small part in it.
Moreover, I assume Alvarez boycotted 2004's most experimental (for better or for worse) Hollywood films: I Heart Huckabees because of Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind because of Jim Carrey and Kirsten Dunst.
Wasn't Kirsten Dunst also in a little movie this year called Spider-Man 2?
Alvarez has every right to boycott films, but as PABAAH's boycott list continues to grow, he's only hurting himself.
At least he'll still be patriotic.
